The book of Esther is one of the 39 books of the "Old Testament" in the Bible. It is the basis for the Jewish holiday of Purim.
In 1975 I was at Temple Beth El in Niagara Falls, New York, and we were talking about activities for the children in the religious school. "Why don't we do a play for Purim?" somebody asked. Then Ann Kushner came up with the idea of combining the Purim story with that of Cinderella. I got to work on it, and came up with "Estherella."
The resulting play would seem to be of the genre farce. It is filled with humor - OK, perhaps my humor is a bit dry at times, often a smidgeon obscure - but you might enjoy it even if only half of the lines intended to be funny tickle you.
The play is in two acts, seven scenes each. Act One. . . . Act Two
Rights to use this play will be granted at no charge through 2009, provided that the playwright be advised at least seven days in advance of the intended use.
